W&P Erotic finalIt’s the big V-Day countdown!

Or not.

Read on for weekend picks guaranteed to be “relationship neutral”.

Drink Poetry

Whether you’re romantically enmeshed or fancy free, the Whisky & Poetry Salon ~ Erotic will whet your whistle and get your motor racing.

World Whisky Specialist Travis Tidwell of Beam Suntory will offer whisky tasting education and history while matching four different whiskies with the poetic styles of a quartet of provocative writers.

Alexis Rhone Fancher is Poetry Editor of Cultural Weekly, a multiple Pushcart Prize nominee, and is now infamous for her sex shop reading at the NoHo Lit Crawl.

Phillip T. Nails is a performance poet and co-founder of The Poetry Society of Los Angeles where he directs the City of Angels iteration of The Poetry Brothel.

K Bradford (a.k.a. Johnny T) has sauced up stages across the U.S. with her poetry, drag, emceeing and storytelling and has produced drag and burlesque spectacles in Chicago and Austin.

Renaissance man Christopher-Calvin Pollard is a tintypist, a writer of “erotic bon bons” (yum!), and a designer of couture women’s high heels.

Those specific high heels may not make an appearance at the Salon…but there will be literary stilettos aplenty.

The retro-Rat Pack fabulous Three Clubs Lounge has plenty of dark corners to cozy into; the louche evening begins with a Welcome Whisky Punch created by Michael J. Neff: one of the pioneers of the bespoke cocktail movement.

This Thursday, you know you want to….

Forget Broadway and bring on the broads at Thenardiers Inn.

Forget Broadway and bring on the broads at Thenardiers Inn.

Javert!

If you like Broadway classics with a side of sly, grab tickets immediately to one of the final two  performances of  Thenardiers Inn: A Les Miserables Cabaret hosted by  incorrigible innkeeper Master Thenardier.

Or, as the show puts it, “Witness the heartwarming tale of human compassion, told by a complete asshole.”

The talented troupe does an impressive job of riffing irreverently on the classic musical while also honoring its heart.  Saucy, improv’d-in-the-moment mayhem makes you feel like you’ve been invited to the best private party in town.

The immersive, 360 degree setting allows for up-close-and-personal audience interaction — you’ve been warned! — and includes Thenardier’s guests (i.e. you) swigging wine whenever human bloodhound Javert’s name is mentioned.

Which is often.

To aid and abet your tribute boozing,  you’ll get a free drink if you wear your best late-18th century finery to the just-added show on Thursday or dress in red for the final night of the show’s run on Saturday.

The French Revolution has never been so fun.

THENARDIERS INNThurs, Feb 12 & Sat, Feb 14.  Doors/drinking 7pm; Show 8-10pm. $30; 21+Creating Arts Studios, 3110 Pennsylvania Ave, Santa Monica 90404.  Tix & more info HERE.

Vegas J Jenkins: your Edwardian Ball Host with the Most (Moustache).

Be My Beastly Baby

The 15th Annual Edwardian Ball is subtitled “My Gorey Valentine”, which pretty much works no matter what your current view of Cupid Day is.

“Edwardian” refers to both the era (early 1900’s so…costume hint!) and to inspiration/illustrator Edward Gorey whose unsettling children and lugubrious adults will be celebrated via co-producers Rosin Coven and Vau de Vire Society‘s yearly adaptation of a Gorey story.  This year’s staged spectacle, which combines art, music, dance and circus at the luxe Fonda Theater, is The Beastly Baby.

It’s about a monstrous infant but the description can certainly be applied to your ex if you’re in that particular frame of mind.

Sip absinthe cocktails during performances that include The Gentlemen Callers of LA, The Speakeasy Syndicate, Les Petit Bon Bons, and Fou Fou Ha! or while exploring the Rooftop Garden, the Midway Games and the Portrait Booth.

Leave no Gorey corner unturned.

Fine single malt whisky and dynamic, star-power poets at a classic Hollywood lounge?

Yes, please.

Celebrate the power of whisky and words at the Whisky & Poetry Salon’s Two Year Anniversary on WEDNESDAY, Nov 19 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rat Pack-retro-fabulous 3 Clubs Lounge in Hollywood!

The celebration honors WritLargePress’s recent, epic DTLAB #90for90 literary pop-up at Union Station with a trio of amazing Writ Large Press
poets: Melora Walters,  Mike “thePoet” Sonksen, and a rare appearance by the allegedly retired Chiwan Choi.

Melora Walters may or may not read poetry this way. (Melora Walters's "homage to Pina Bausch" by Christopher-Calvin Pollard)

Not as rare as Yeti but pretty close.

Riding the wave of pre-Whisky Fest excitement, the cheeky and erudite single malt specialist Johnnie “the Scot” Mundell will be in top form dispensing fine single malt Scotch and expert whisky education.

Finally, you will DEFINITELY want to come early/stay late to investigate the Three Clubs cocktail menu revamped by Michael J. Neff, one of the most innovative pioneers of the craft cocktail movement.

Whisky & Poetry salonDistill my beating heart….

The Whisky & Poetry Salon  is an intimate evening of decadent debauchery: Scotland’s finest single malt whiskies and the communal love of all things poetic….

We can’t wait to trade you whisky for your words….

Bring a poem, your own or someone else’s, and read it in a candle-lit circle of fellow aficionados in the 1920’s B Black Penthouse with its dramatic cityscape views.

You’ll climb six floors to get there but a stop for single malt at the 3rd floor Whisky Way Station will make it worth the climb.  Light bites and more whisky await you in the penthouse!

Our cheeky Spirits Ambassador Johnnie “the Scot” Mundell pours fine single malt Scotch throughout the evening and offers erudite whisky education in between the reading of poems.

Our wonderful feature, noir poet Cece Peri, is the evening’s grand finale! (And there are rumors of an exciting special guest!)

Need poetic inspiration?  Here’s a Scottish drinking poem:

Drink today and drown all sorrow
You may perhaps not be here tomorrow
Best while you have it, use your breath
There is no drinking after death.
