Tonight and beyond…so many ways to celebrate Spring!

Sprung on SpringSPRUNG ON SPRING

Wanderlust bigger than your spring fever travel budget?   Alcove and Spring Bar have you covered! Tokyo and the South of France are just a couple of the garden-centric locations you can visit tonight via delish libations at this annual Los Feliz cocktail bash; think Suntory Toki highballs/cherry blossoms and St. Germain cocktails/elderflowers. Or take a trip down the rabbit hole at the Alice in Wonderland-themed tea party, which includes Hendricks gin cocktails and an “Eat Me/Drink Me” shot.  Admission is free and so is the spring-themed photo booth. Cocktails can be obtained via tokens at the bar. The first 75 people in attendance get swag like flower crowns and aura photographs; with five drink stations, your aura will definitely read “very, very happy”.

GOLDEN STATE WHISKEY & CHEESE TASTING

Greenbar & Cheese

You know about pairing wine and cheese…but what about pairing whiskey and cheese Learn how to nose, taste and pair these two fab food groups in an intimate class lead by Hilary Kinzler, a TV producer for the Food Network and Head Cheesemonger at V Cheese Shoppe, and  Kim Ohanneson, a Certified Whisky Ambassador and the President of  Women Who Whiskey ~ Los Angeles (a.k.a. Ms. Go Go!) California’s craft whiskey movement is exploding and Kim will introduce you to three unique and delicious expressions from the Golden State’s most innovative distillers and micro-producers.  Hilary will pair the whiskey with cheeses so good they will practically make you weep with happiness.  Plus, get unique gifts or stock up on weekend party supplies with V Cheese Shoppe’s fabulous selection of  cheese, charcuterie, olive oils, olives, vinegars, and accoutrements. PLEASE NOTE: this is a VERY small and intimate class and will sell out quickly!

You say you want a revolution....

There’s a riot going on….

Go Go’ers, Mother’s Day weekend approaches and it’s going to be fun.

If the above statement seems too good to be true, rest assured that no lace doilies or creepy porcelain dolls are involved.

Basically, it’s your usual weekend with a higher percentage of take-along-Mom potential.

No beady doll eyes…Go Go guaranteed.

You Say You Want a Revolution

They just want to change the world…the wine world, that is.

You’ll want to be on the front line of intrepid imbibers  when Wine Riot returns this Friday and Saturday with 250 wines from around the world, a “GoVino” glass to sample them, wine gurus to give you the  veritas about the vino, and a mobile app to track your 250 new faves and tell you where to buy them when you recover.

Which you will…eventually.

Since it’s a party not a class, of course there will be a DJ, temp tattoos, a photo booth to flaunt them, and food options from local vendors for a few extra bucks.

Think of the latter as rebel insurance.

WINE RIOT LA 2014 – SPRING Fri, May 9, 7-11pm and Sat, May 10, 1-5pm & 7-11pm.  $60/21+ California Market Center, 110 E 9th St, LA 90070  More info & tix HERE

Tunnel of Love....

Tunnel of Love….

pARTy in the Hood – Part 1

Have you promised la mere more face time?  Bring her along to these art-tastic events for some pre-Mom’s Day one-on-one.

NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is always dancing through the streets and this Saturday, Figueroa is the Second Saturday epicenter of fun.

Start the evening at the 1st Anniversary Extravaganza of the Cypress Village (underground) Tunnel  Art Walk.  The title may be a mouthful but it reflects the exuberance of community involvement.

The pedestrian tunnel, one of many built under busy streets to get kids safely to and from school, was closed for years because of gang activity until Yancey Quinones, long-time Cypress Park resident and owner of Antigua Coffee House, spearheaded the reopening and repurposing of the tunnel as an art gallery a year ago.

The block party bash is curated by educator/community activist Gary de la Rosa who was involved in the inaugural event.  Conrad Romo, founder of the monthly literary variety show Tongue & Groove, Jessica Ceballos (founder of the local Bluebird Reading Series) and Eric Etzli will be featured during  the Spoken Word portion of the evening.

Art Meza, whose photographs are featured in the book LoWriting, will exhibit; Meza also coordinated artists and will arrange “a car and food theme connection to his work as in Low-Riders and a Taco truck.”

Go Go’ers, it takes a village to make an art show.

pARTy in the Hood – Part 2

Go Go’ers, the Figueroa fun continues….

Head up the street,  hang a left at Avenue 50.

In the Main Gallery at heart-of-community  Avenue 50 Studios, Raoul de la Sota, whose many accomplishments include  being the first Chicano artist to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, will be exhibiting El Camino: A Journey: 30 lyrical  paintings inspired by his recent travels through Spain and Portugal along the famed pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago.

In the Annex, marvel at fiber artist Connie Rohman‘s Lost Languages.  The pieces feature  fabric-and-thread renditions of  Morse code, Gregg Shorthand, and other now-forgotten ways to communicate.  Not only are Rohman’s  hand-dyed, jewel-toned pieces gorgeous to look at, the hidden messages are fascinating to puzzle out.  Your mom may even be able to read that shorthand.

Give your mom the opportunity to show off….

Life Is An UnCabaret With Mom

On Sunday night’s UnCabaretyou have the rare opportunity to laugh ABOUT moms WITH Mom on Mother’s Day.

Best of all, your mother gets in FREE!

Yes, Go Go’ers, it’s a trifecta of Mother’s Day night fun.

Mom-centric comedy includes: Tim Bagley‘s mom’s movie reviews, wild mom stories from Del Shores, comedian and mom (mom-median?)  Lauren Weedman being Lauren Weedman, and Jen Kirkman (author, NYT best seller I Can’t Even Take Care of Myself), who will make you appreciate being born.

Let Mom bask in the glow of accomplishment.

But wait, there’s more!  In addition to classy and hilarious Mistress of Ceremonies & Mirth Beth Lapides, you can look forward to comedian  James Davis (Chelsea Lately), violinist Chris Woods, singer/comedian Rachel Bloom (How I Met Your Mother), and dapper Dustin Davis (unCab intern).

And to reiterate, the UnCabaret show is two-tix-for-the-price-of-one; even your unborn  child can take you to a show….

Want art and poetry and sunsets but flying solo?

Just want to do something unique for Val-Day ’14?

If you answered yes to any or all of the above, head to Union Station for  Metro’s Sunset Art Tour with Mike “the Poet” Sonksen.  For this special, one-night-only Valentine’s Day event, 3rd-gen Angeleno Sonksen — known for his unique, poetic/historical rambles through L.A. — will lead guests on a poetry-infused tour of art work at Metro Gold line stations.

Think poetry isn’t your “thing”?   Think again.

Sonksen is one of the most dynamic performers in SoCal; he’ll shake up your heart, rattle your brain, and show you just how exciting spoken word can be.

No Pressure Prom

Prom do-over

Make a date with  yourself, your Entourage, your Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, or your fave plus-one for  Unique L.A.’s  Fake Prom.

No spiked punch of dubious origin here: expect free cocktails and non-alcoholic libations, a Coolhaus ice cream sammy bar, and a Snack Station for sustenance after you tear up the dance floor thanks to the epic DJs.

The Academy of Handmade might sound dirty in the context of prom but is actually a group of crafty DIY-ers who will help you assemble boutonnières and corsages to be immortalized at the “awkward prom portrait” photo booth.

Advice on the best floral accessory for your awesome tuxedo t-shirt?   Priceless.
