The Weekend Go Go: Bowie Birthday Party, Viva Les Femmes, Adolescence Angst + More!

Bowie & Jagger...Dancing in the Street.
Bowie & Jagger…Dancing in the Street.

Whatever it means to you,

the only thing to do is dance.

Put on Your Red Shoes

Ms. Go Go usually posts events in chronological order but for obvious reasons, we’re jumping Sunday’s David Bowie Nite at the Echoplex to the front of the Must Go Go queue….

Not that you need your arm twisted….

Presented by The Echo and Part Time Punks, the annual all-Bowie birthday bash will be a bittersweet affair this year but what better way to celebrate David Jones’s life and artistry than getting hot and sweaty to his entire oeuvre.

You’ll be smiling through your glitter tears.

Guest DJs ANDY ROURKE (The Smiths ) and Jose Maldonado (Sweet & Tender Hooligans) will spin “40+ years of David Bowie’s brilliant back catalogue… From psychedelic folk to glitter and glam, from funk to soul and the thin white duke. From Ziggy to Iggy to Eno to Fripp to Bolan to Lennon to Jagger and Lou and Andy and Freddy (Mercury) and even Nicholas Roeg and David Lynch…all the best of Bowie’s collaborations will get a spin, too, not to mention his glam contemporaries and post-punk disciples…”

Let’s dance….

DAVID BOWIE NITE — Sun, Jan 17; 9pm.  $15atd/18+The Echoplex — 1822 W. Sunset Blvd; The Echoplex is located below The Echo — enter through the alley at 1154 Glendale Blvd, LA.  Tix and more info HERE.

Feminists, Architecture, Cocktails

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it,” said 18th century philosopher/statesman Edward Burke.

Whether you’re a Boomer, Gen Xer or Millennial, you’ll want to revisit history with SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY: Mary Dore’s illuminating look at the history of the women’s movement from the days of hats-and-gloves feminism to present day activists.

The critically lauded documentary, which uses dramatizations, performance and archival imagery, will screen Thursday at the Wilshire Ebell Theater: the gorgeous Beaux Arts theater and private women’s club, which is the oldest west of the Mississippi and currently open to new members!

The screening is at 7:00 p.m.; come early for drinks, light bites and tours of the Ebell.

No hats or gloves required….

SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY — Thu, Jan 14; 6:30 [cocktails] & 7:30 [screening]. $20 GA/$10 student.  “Intended for mature audiences; adult language & content”  The Wilshire Ebell, 4401 West 8th Street, LA 90005.  Tix & info HERE.

Bring on the Macrame!

If your New Year’s resolutions include purging adolescent angst, head to The Bitch Seat and spend Friday night at NerdMelt with other (former) tortured teens.

Hey, it’s just like eighth grade!

Quintuple hyphenate threat creator-host-producer Lyssa Mandel and her cohost-boyfriend Phil Casale invite comedian Baron Vaughn, Emily Blotnick, Anna Akana, Zach Sherwin and Zoe Jarman to their onstage, interview style show.

The guests’ mission?

To bring and share poignant, albeit cringe-worthy, creative stylings from their awkward YA years; “Wicca boxes” are mentioned but pink glitter diaries, Goth poetry and splatter art could easily make an appearance.

Post-creative bloodletting, Mandel and Casale interview guests in a “Judy Blume meets Dr. Phil” mode that results in guffaws and hugs for all.

Break out your sparkly, crocheted leg warmers in solidarity.

THE BITCH SEAT — Fri, 1/15; 7-8:30pm.  $8/All Ages with Parent or Guardian 21+NerdMelt Showroom, 522 Sunset Blvd, LA 90046.  Tix and info HERE.
