The month of screams is here.

This weekend, there’s also Asian-inspired cocktails…and good ‘ole American pie.

Suddenly, you remember why October is your favorite month.

ZJU Theatre’s Urban Death ~ Tour of Terror…if you dare.

No Rural Death Here….

There are two kinds of horror shows:

1) over-the-top outrageous

2) under-your-skin disturbing — the kind that makes you want to go home and douse yourself with holy water.

Urban Death – Tour of Terror is the second kind.

Starting tonight and continuing every Friday and Saturday night in October, horror-meister Zombie Joe,  co-directer Jana Wimer and the disturbingly talented troupe of ZJU creepers deliver the grim goods via the signature, semi-immersive “Urban Death” Maze.  There are five hour-long Tours of Terror a night but don’t wait to buy tix for this insanely popular and insanely disturbing event.

Check your stash of holy water before you go.

It’s not a concert…it’s a situation!

It’s Not a Concert, It’s a Situation

If you thought music fests ended with summer, think again.

This Saturday, the Greek Theater transforms itself from Mediterranean-inspired amphitheater to a hotspot of Americana for The L.A. Bluegrass Situation 2015.

The plaza of the hillside theater will be transformed into an outdoor party with sets by bluegrass musicians Sam Outlaw, Spirit Family Reunion, The Dustbowl Revival, and The Wild Reeds. Get guitar lessons and enjoy lawn games.

You’re ready to take on all contenders.

Sustain your game with BBQ from California-based food trucks including Status Kuo, Cassell’s Hamburgers, Urban Pie and The Lobos Truck.  Stay sweet with s’mores by Mallow Mallow and mellow with beers from Lagunitas Brewing Co.

In the evening, Punch Brothers, Dawes, The Lone Bellow, Della Mae, Jonny Fritz, and Gregory Alan Isakov take the Main Stage.

Bring your jean jacket; the weather may drop down into the high 60’s.

How to Have Your Pie and Eat It Too

Whether pumpkin or pear, berry or banana cream, pie is as American as…well, apple pie.

This Sunday, celebrate the divine mix of crust and filling at KCRW’s 7th Annual Good Food Pie Contest where talented amateurs vie against pro bakers.

They get bragging rights.

You get samples.

The pie-off takes place at Wilson Plaza outside the Fowler Museum at UCLA.  Get there early for a cookbook swap and stay for cooking themed kids activities and talks  about Native American arts at the museum.  There are panels on alternative grains as well as creative creams and custard fillings.

Suggested question for Q&A: what is the maximum amount of chocolate that can safely be put in a cream pie?

DJ Anne Litt creates the afternoon soundtrack.  Bring your dancing shoes and work up an appetite for the mid-afternoon pie tasting then jump up and down and cheer for the winners when they’re announced in the late afternoon.

The more enthusiastic the cheer, the more calories you burn.

KCRW’s 7TH ANNUAL GOOD FOOD PIE CONTEST — Sun, Oct 4; 11am – 4pm.  FREEFowler Museum at UCLA, North Campus, UCLA, LA 90095.  More info HERE.
