Summertime in the city getting a little same-old, same-old?
This weekend, ditch the flip-flops and put some edge into August:
A punk food fest.
A guillotine celebration.
Come Friday, summer’s gonna get all shook up.
Grill of Your Dreams
Armed with knives and wearing stilettos, you’ve seen Nadia G being wicked funny and just plain bad-ass in Bitchin’ Kitchen.
This Friday, she’ll be dishing the delish — and the one-liners — in person at Riot Grill: a femme-tastic mash-up of punk, comedy and food pop-up in celebration of LGBT rights.
Catch fiercest-of-the-fierce Babes in Toyland at their last L.A. show on their 2015 tour, take-no-prisoners Mexican garage punk band Le Butcherettes fronted by Teri Gender Bender, and brash Philadelphia-based duo Slutever. Nadia G performs with her band The Menstruators; Emmy Award-winning comedian Sara Schaefer hosts.
Bitchin’ Kitchen will also be serving up the kind of sassy, inspired comfort food that took Nadia G from YouTube supernova to Cooking Channel star including: Philly Cheesesteaks with Creamy Taleggio Sauce; Sweet Fig & Prosciutto Pizza; Crack Bacon Dark Chocolate Cupcakes and Thai Basil and Blueberry Hard Lemonade.
Come down and wave your rainbow flag high.
RIOT GRILL — Fri, Aug 7 @ 7pm. $39.99 – $99.99/all ages — Regent Theater DTLA, 448 S Main St, DTLA 90013. Tix and more info HERE.
Fun with Guillotines
The Grand Guignolers like absinthe. A lot.
One of many reasons to like them.
Not mention their talent for producing some of the most entertaining immersive theater in town.
You’ll have your chance to revel in all of the above this Saturday at the commedia dell’arte troupe’s belated Bastille Day Fun-Raiser.
Forced to reschedule after lightning literally struck on July 14th, the fête celebrates the beginning of the French revolution and the fall of the aristocracy — who literally lost their heads. The soiree is also a fundraiser for the Grand Guignolers’ ambitious, upcoming production of Victor Hugo’s The Man Who Laughs.
You will laugh at the performances of the Grand Guignolers’ signature “tiny, naughty puppets” and also while taking “cheerful souvenir photos” with the guillotine.
Be sure to wear your best vintage, cocktail, or red, white and blue duds for that rare photo op.
Theatrical entertainment, drinks (including absinthe) a dessert bar (rum cake is promised) and a Bastille pinata round out the evening.
And never forget that “The Guillotine is still there. Awaiting for your affection.”
Best. Party invite. Ever….
BASTILLE DAY FUN-RAISER — Sat, Aug 8; 7:30 – 11pm. $35 – $100 — A private garden, 4729 Orange Knoll, La Canada 91011. . Tix and more info HERE.
No Need to Bring Chips
The weather may not be scorch-level but that doesn’t mean you don’t need heat relief.
This Sunday, have your avocado in food pairings, including icy paletas, from a bevy of food trucks, and drink it too in the form of avocado ale.
Yes, avocado ale.
Take a focused, brewer-led tour to check out the creation of this celebrated, seasonal ale: a “light, kolsch-style beer with a slight haze” brewed with garlic, lime juice, red pepper and honey.
In addition to consuming California’s state fruit in all its iterations, sample specialty flight bars, play avocado corn hole and check out chalk art while grooving to six hours of music. There’s also an avocado photo booth.
Fingers crossed your head appears where the avocado pit usually does….
