You’ve been training hard to rule the summer season.
Test your chops with this weekend of fun.
Step and Repeat
The Museum of Contemporary Art always throws the hippest parties.
So it’s a given you’ll want to hustle down to DTLA for MOCA’s Step and Repeat: a three-day extravaganza of cutting edge music, performance art, comedy, and poetry from L.A.’s various vibrant art scenes.
The bash, which kicks off on Friday, also includes sets from cutting-edge DJs and special installations in The MOCA Store where the party goes down.
They bring the beats; you bring the bop, shop and drop.
Performers include Geo Wyeth’s multi-hyphenate dazzle (Friday), Baron Vaughn’s sharp-eyed comedy (Saturday), the mercurial words of award-winning poet Nathaniel Mackey, and always funny, ever-trenchant performance artist Kristina Wong (a.k.a. the wannabe Mrs. Jeremy Lin).
Bask in the buzz of creativity.
STEP AND REPEAT — Fri, July 17 & Sat, July 18 from 6-11pm and Sun, July 19 from 6-10pm. $12; $30 w/e pass; moca members FREE — Museum of Contemporary Art, 152 N Central Ave, DTLA 90012. For tix and more info, go HERE.
Beatnik and Repeat
Cinefamily‘s newest series Pulp My Daisy: Jazz, Noir & Beatniks has everything you could want for a summer afternoon. Sordid behavior. Violent women. Bleak and uncertain outcomes.
Also, no need for sunscreen.
Saturday’s offering The Naked Kiss has all of the above plus “pleasure for sale” and “trouble for free” with Constance Towers as a bald-headed hooker trying to go straight while beating up virtually everyone in sight.
Future offerings in the series include Tony Curtis as an amoral PR hack (Sweet Smell of Success), a young Warren Beatty as a comic on the run from the mob (Mickey One) and Allen Baron as a hit man trying to become “human” (Blast of Silence).
Pass the jujubes.
PULP MY DAISY: JAZZ, NOIR AND BEATNIKS ~ THE NAKED KISS — Sat, July 18; 2pm. $12 (Other films in Saturday afternoon series at various times.) — Cinefamily, 611 N Fairfax, LA 90036. For tix and more info, go HERE.
Sip and Repeat
World class sipping awaits you this Sunday when Galco’s Soda Pop Stop holds its 5th annual Summer Soda Tasting.
Titled Around the World in 80 Sips, the event features an international collection of sodas brewed in countries as diverse as Brazil, Jamaica, Germany, Australia and more.
Galco’s proprietor John Nese seeks out small-batch, often hard-to-find brands that still use recipes featuring cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. In addition to traditional colas, ginger beers and sarsaparillas, discover new-to-you flavors like cucumber, coconut and rose petals.
Stop and smell the rose petal soda pop.
Boyle Heights faves Ollin headline the musical portion of the all ages evening: a benefit for Friends of the Southwest Museum.
This Sunday, sip good, do good.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 SIPS — Sun, July 19; 5-8pm. $5/kids (5-11), $12/adults; also sold at Galco’s — cash/check only. $15/day of the event — Galco’s Soda Pop Stop, 5702 York Blvd, LA 90042. For tix and more info, go HERE.
