Maybe you’d planned to spend the long weekend catching up on Saved by the Bell.
Just in case, here are some other options….
Independence Do Si Do
In addition to BBQ, a pie eating contest, live music, a cake walk, horseshoes and other sportin’ games, including the aforementioned watermelon seed spitting contest, you’ll get two chances to strut your stuff with Master Caller Evo Blustein and finish in time for fireworks or the neighborhood sparkler display.
Watch out for pint-sized pyros….

Does July 4th = patriotic beer drinking in your holiday playbook?
If yes, head to Angel City Brewery for ‘Merica Fest: a FREE-to-enter, twelve-hour celebration of the music , food and freedom-loving suds that makes our country great.
About that beer: everyone’s fave DTLA beer spot will offer specialty cellared beer flights at the flight bar.
Listen to the likes of The Vignes Rooftop Revival and the The Get Down Boys while nom-ing comfort faves from Burnt To A Crisp Texas Smokehouse, Dogtown dogs and Steel City Sandwich plus modern classics like blow-torched sammies-on-steroids from Fill R Up Gastro Garage. Si Paletas popsicles and Peddler’s Creamery ice cream provide extra cool-factor.
More free and freedom-loving fun: get to Angel City early with your cornhole team; the first ten to sign up make it into the 1:00 pm tournament. Use the nearby Metro, show your TAP card to get a free, picnic-friendly Angel City gift.

Party on, patriot.

Newport Jazz. Eric Jonrosh. ‘Nuff Said.
More interested in American culture than Americana?
Cinefamily is celebrating the former — from the sublime to the ridiculous — with their FREE July 4th Jazz on a Summer’s Day BBQ.
The highbrow cultural riff of the day is Jazz on a Summer’s Day: fashion photographer/director Bert Stern’s concert film/cinematic collage, shot in 35mm Kodachrome, of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.
Jazz greats of the day include Anita O’Day, Thelonious Monk, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Chuck Berry, Sonny Stitt, Chico Hamilton and Dinah Washington plus various be-bopping audience members, neighbors and jazz enthusiasts in the vicinity.
Oh, to have been a fly on that stage.
For lowbrow culture at its funniest, brace yourself for a sneak preview of Eric Jonrosh’s (Will Ferrell) overwrought, pulp-noir Spoils Before Dying, about a jazz pianist-turned-gumshoe (Michael Kenneth Williams, Boardwalk Empire). Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Haley Joel Osmont top a cast loaded with past and present SNL’ers plus other people funny on July 4th and at other times.
BBQ, beer and live jazz on the patio round out the evening and remind you that it’s summer. Best of all, it’s FREE with RSVP although RSVP doesn’t guarantee entry.
Plan your life accordingly.
