The promised rain is playing coy but this weekend still has plenty of spring in its step.
Black & White & French All Over
Grab your Gauloises and sashay over to Cinefamily where La collectionneuse (“the woman who collects”) opens her private treasury of Gallic cinematic gems.
A co-presentation of the French Film and TV Office, La Collectionneuse: A Black and White Night features rarely seen French film shorts in — you guessed it — black and white.
Friday night’s highlight?
A 35 mm copy of avant-garde filmmaker Jean Cocteau’s Blood of a Poet, which managed to rile both the Catholic Church and the prestigious Jockey-Club de Paris.
Naturally, where’s there’s scandal, there’s a fete.
DJ’s will spin French tunes while you eat and drink in black and white in Cinefamily’s back patio, which will be styled as a French guinguette: the 18th century, riverside, open-air taverns memorialized in a million (+/-) Impressionist paintings. Dress in black and white — anything goes from frou frou to TGIF — and memorialize your ensemble in the themed photobooth.
La collectionneuse has her eye on you.
LA COLLECTIONNEUSE: A French Black and White Night — Fri, April 24 @ 7pm. $12 — Cinefamily, 611 N Fairfax Ave, LA 90036. For tix and more info, go HERE.
Attention, eco-foodies and people with mothers.
The Artisanal LA Spring Show is about to get sprung.
Whether you’re feeling eco-virtuous post-Earth Day (Hybrid tomatoes with Urban Farm! DIY terrariums with Birch & Bone!) or want to pick up something luscious/gorgeous for Maman (Chef-curated gift baskets from The Fare Trade! Aida Mollenkamp’s Keys to the Kitchen cookbook!), the Spring Show has your shopping list covered.
Sigh of relief.
Over 150+ artisanal makers will gather at The Reef’s 2nd floor Magic Box; 60 vendors are new this season. Check out gorgeous floral displays from Amelia Posada, attend a pickling party with L.A.’s Master Preservers, or screen-print with Self-Help Graphics, which is also creating totes available to early Artisanal LA attendees.
In other words, set your alarm.
Rest your feet and indulge your sweet tooth at the Modern Milk & Cookies Corner featuring Califia Farms, take a photo booth pic of your DIY creation and sip a hosted beverage at the The Social Booth, or peruse the first issue of Life & Thyme (storytelling through food) at their eponymous lounge over caffeine from Copa Vida.
Did we mention “come hungry”? Yes, that too.
ARTISANAL LA ~ SPRING SHOW — Sat, April 25 & Sun, April 26; 11am – 6pm. Presale $12 per day; $15 w/e pass; $15 atd — The Reef, 2nd floor Magic Box, 1933 So Broadway, DTLA 90007. For tix and more info, go HERE.
Reeling in the Years
Even with relatively new installations like Urban Light by Chris Burden (a.k.a. the lamp posts) and Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass (a.k.a. the rock), LACMA seems like it’s been here forever.
So it’s a shock to realize that in the museum world, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a spring chicken of 50.
That doesn’t mean a paucity of presents. Au contraire.
This Sunday, on the 50th Anniversary Free Community Day, LACMA invites everyone to the party to enjoy 50 for 50: Gifts on the Occasion of LACMA’s Anniversary. This is the first presentation of a selection of highlights from philanthropist A. Jerrold Perenchio’s recent, historic bequest ($500 million — LACMA’s biggest ever!) of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Bonus party favor: you also get free entry to usually ticketed exhibitions including Nature and the American Vision: The Hudson River School.
Happy birthday, LACMA!
Please…no confetti in the gallery.
50 FOR 50: GIFTS ON THE OCCASION OF LACMA’S ANNIVERSARY — Opening day: Sun, April 26; 10am – 6pm. FREE — Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, LA 90036. For more info, go HERE.
