Fa La L.A. Xmas
Leap into Christmas!

Party, ponies, chocolate, cocktails, food, mixtapes and whisky….

Hey, maybe it is the most wonderful time of the year!

Christmas Culture

Have mall Muzak Christmas carols left you Scrooge-ified?

Put on your most un-ironic elf hat and head to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion this afternoon for the 55th Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration. The FREE, family-friendly Christmas Eve  spectacular will put the “hurray” back in the holiday with 20+ musical groups, choirs and dance troupes representing all of L.A.’s melting pot glory.

Too busy wrapping prezzies and drinking wassail?  The whole shebang will be shown on PBS SoCal.

If you do go, seating is first come, first seated with in-and-out privileges throughout the show.  Plus, FREE PARKING under the Music Center.

Now that’s a true Christmas miracle.

Whiskey Xmas

Midwest-bound plane get canceled?

Too holidazed to function?

Need a wee dram before facing the fam?

Head to WeHo for Rock ‘n Reilly’s Christmas Pajama Party.  Show up in your PJ’s and you get a toy.

If a baby Slinky doesn’t do the trick, you can guarantee your Christmas is merry and bright with a variety of spirits  — not the Ghost of Christmas Past kind — at the all-day jam-o-rama, which starts at 9:00 a.m.

In other words, it’s the boozy childhood you always wished you’d had.

How to Get a Pony for Christmas

Here are a couple of day-after-Christmas options:

1) Wrestle a stuffed horse from a crazed granny in the war zone-like toy department of a big box discount store.

Tear your hair out.

2) Sip champagne in the Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park.  Indulge in signature dishes and cocktails at the First Annual Guest Chef Series.  Enjoy Opening Day of thoroughbred racing.

Remain stress-free.

Ms. Go Go thinks the choice is clear.

The food-and-drink series, which takes place on the first and third weekends during 2015, features Sprout LA chefs such as Ivan Marquez (Short Order LA), Jason Neroni (Picca Peru) and Timothy Hollingsworth (Barrel and Ashes); famed mixologist Julian Cox will pair cocktails with the iconic dishes.

Plus…horse racing.

With the chandelier twinkling overhead, it’s like the grown-up version of Sparkle Pony…

FIRST ANNUAL GUEST CHEF SERIESFri, Dec 26 & Sat, Dec 27; noon – 5pm.  $85; 21+ Chandelier Room, Santa Anita Park, 285 W Huntington Dr, Arcadia 91007.  For tix & more info, go HERE.

Merry Mixtape

If the holidays left you with a giant commercialization hangover, let your DIY flag fly this Saturday at the 6th Annual Holiday Mixtape Swap.

Benefiting the L.A. Zinefest in February, the swap is simple: make a mixtape, get a mixtape.

CDs are ok but old-school cassettes are encouraged — presumably pencils will be on hand for tape rewinds —   and so is creative packaging.

In other words, you can go beyond the reindeer paper and the stick-on bows.

There will be performances, readings and raffles at the Church of Fun, not to mention “existential exorcisms”.

It’s not called the Church of Fun for nothing….

Because You’ve Been Very, Very Good….

What’s the best way to reward yourself for going back to work/surviving the holidays/not engaging in fisticuffs with any member of your family?

The sweet, sweet answer is The L.A. Chocolate Festival and Pastry Show.

Sample the wares of L.A.’s top chocolate makers, pastry chefs and confectioners.  Meet celebrity chefs such as French pastry legend Stephane Treand and Annette Starbuck whose Goodie Girls bakery was a winner on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.

Naturally, your ticket to the Sunday afternoon sweets soiree includes bubbly, wine and other spirits.

The event is all ages…your call.
