Poised between summer chillaxin’ and Halloween bacchanalia, September is the calendar equivalent of Wednesday Hump Day.
But based on this weekend, September is acting like a baller.
Go Go’ers, TGI
It’s not unheard of that a musician is jailed for drug charges but it’s unusual when an incarceration launches a charity.
In 1975, Detroit MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer’s two-year stint at Lexington Federal Penitentiary inspired The Clash song Jail Guitar Doors.
Decades later, British musician/activist Billy Bragg borrowed the title for a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing musical instruments into prisons to help rehabilitate prisoners.
Two years later, Kramer founded Jail Guitar Doors USA.
Friday night at Ford Theaters, Kramer and friends Tom Morello, Jackson Browne, White Fence, Ben Harper & Ellen Harper, Jill Sobule, program grad Franc Foster and MC Dana Gould ROCK OUT! for Jail Guitar Doors USA. Their mission — to implement correctional reform and reduce recidivism.
Your mission? Rock out to help JGD USA rock on….
ROCK OUT! FOR JAIL GUITAR DOORS — Fri, Sept 5 @ 8:30 pm. $35 GA/$150 VIP (includes premium reserved seating & catered pre-show reception with artists) — Ford Theaters,2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood 90068. For more info & tix, go HERE.
Going into withdrawal after end o’ summer food fests?
Fear not…LA Underground Market has your back when it comes to gourmet grub.
A clandestine club for “adventurous foodies”, the market allows you to sample, then buy gustatory goods (most dishes $2-$5 — CASH ONLY) from private caterers, chefs and restauranteurs who are poised to transition from the private sector to public adoration.
In other words, LA Underground Market gives you the opportunity to try the Next Big Thing in nom nom before the food mags dub it the “Next Big Thing”.
Bragging rights are so satisfying.
Join the club (mandatory) ASAP for free. The secret (but near DTLA) location, as well as the password, the final list of vendors, and a link for $5 discount entry tickets will be emailed to you by midnight on Friday; tickets will be $10 at the door.
Enjoy Crack in the Shell, who have opened for the Gin Blossoms and others, while sampling goodies such as Drunken Cake Pops whose creators Sara and Zoila “didn’t want to be known as alcoholics, so…became entrepreneurs.”
In other words…gals after Ms. Go Go’s heart.
LA UNDERGROUND MARKET — Sat, Sept 6 – 9 pm. $5 pre-event entry fee; $10 atd; food samples are $2 – $5 — You must be a LAUM club member to attend; sign up HERE.
Meet, Drink & Be Scary
If you’re the sort of person who would happily celebrate Halloween all year long — yes, you with the witch costume at the ever-ready — you’ll want to put Abrakadabra: Live Ghosts on Stage at the top of your counting-the-days list.
In addition to the promised live ghosts, the Saturday night spook-show features freakishly funny horrorcore rapper Adam Franklin, “magic, music, movies, [and] party”, possible mummies in the aisle, and dead bodies, one of which you may win.
Start clearing the freezer now.
Sideshow performer Brett Loudermilk (Spiegelworld), whose job description includes sword swallowing, lightbulb chomping and snapping rat traps on his tongue, will demonstrate why he’s known as the “Freak prodigy”.
Not coincidentally, you’ll be asked to sign a safety release in case you have a heart attack.
Also, bring a flashlight.
Oh, you’ll find out why….
ABRAKADABRA: LIVE GHOSTS ON STAGE — Sat, Sept 6 @ 8 pm. $12 — Trepany House at Steve Allen Theater, 4773 Hollywood Blvd, LA 90027. For info & tix, go HERE.
Drinking by the numbers
Ms. Go Go hereby nominates David Solmonson and Lesley Jacobs Solmonson for the 2014 “Brilliance in Promo” award.
The husband-and-wife co-authors of the home bar tome The 12 Bottle Bar go beyond the bookstore signing — way beyond — with The 12 Bottle Bar Hop: a Sunday afternoon mini-pub crawl to Bar Lubitsch, The Roger Room and Eveleigh.
At each Weho hot spot, some of the town’s most talented mixologists will prepare a “spirit-focused” cocktail highlighting one of the bottles from the Solmonsons’ book.
Go Go’ers, it’s basically the cocktail equivalent of having Julia Child make you a dish with butter.
Your advance-purchase-only ticket also gets you light bites to keep you hopping, a copy of The 12 Bottle Bar book (“A Dozen Bottles. Hundreds of Cocktails.”), a goodie bag, and a chance to win more swag.
Basically, you can’t afford not to hop.
Can’t make it this Sunday? The Solmonsons will lead another WeHo-centric hop to three additional bars (The Pikey, Harlowe and The Melrose Umbrella Company) on October 4th.
That makes 24 bottles of cheer on the crawl….
12 BOTTLE BAR HOP #1 — Sun, Sept 7, 4-8pm. 21+/$35 advance purchase only — various locations. For more info & tix, go HERE.
