The Weekend Go Go: Poetry Brothel, Avocado Beer & Street Art, Burbank Comedy Fest + More

You know you want to....
You know you want to….

Contemplating a quick getaway?

You’ll want to reconsider.

Your perfect staycation starts today.

Go Go’ers, a weekend is a terrible thing to waste.

They Give Good Read….

During 2nd Thursdays  Downtown Art Walk, the sidewalks can get as crowded as the Las Vegas Strip.  The trick is strategic planning instead of aimless, lemming-like wandering.

Tonight, plan for Poetry Brothel.

Just as sly and sultry as it sounds,  the Poetry Brothel at the gorgeous new location of the MUST wine bar features ladies and gents of the write who love to do it in public and are happy to give you an oh-so-private performance…for a fee, of course.

Think of the latter as literary lap dances.

Madame Rose and the Butler deftly conduct the evening’s  entertainment, which will include spontaneous eruptions of verse and verve from Poetry Whores Claude Moan, Genovive, Carmen Amaya and, yes, it’s true, Velvet Undergarments.

As with any den of iniquity, bring cash.

POETRY BROTHEL @ ARTWALK DTLA Thurs, Aug 14;  7-10pm.  Free but bring cash for $5 tokens for private performancesThe MUST, 117 Winston St, DTLA 90013.  For more info, go HERE.

The Drinking of the Green

Go Go’ers, you can’t get through summer without beer and avocados.

Now, you can have your avocado and drink it too.

This Sunday, Angel City Brewery debuts their highly anticipated Avocado Ale with the 2nd Annual Avocado Festival: an all day bash celebrating California’s state fruit.

In addition to food pairings from  Lime Truck and Son of a BunSi Paletas will provide avocado popsicles & popsicle beer drop-ins, which is pretty much the most refreshing adult libation on the planet.  There will games (Avocado Cornhole, y’all?) and a killer musical lineup put together by Echo Country Outpost.

The fest is free but you’ll want to upgrade your experience with an Arts District Mural Tour curated by savvy insiders Cartwheel Art.  Your $20 ticket not only gets you an up-close-and-personal, golden hour tour of the neighborhood’s most spectacular street art but front-of the-line privileges at the Fest earlier in the day.

A.k.a. pre-horde access to the aforementioned Avocado Ale and paleta combo.

The fest and tour are also a trifecta of  giving: a portion of beer sales will go to Food Forward and Echo Country Outpost and part of the mural tour proceeds will go to Art Share L.A.

Including the paletas, it’s a win/win/win/win situation.

ANGEL CITY AVOCADO FESTIVAL & CARTWHEEL ART TOURSun, August 17; noon to 8pm.  Fest is FREE/Mural tour tix are $20 — Angel City Brewery & Public House, 216 South Alameda Street, DTLA 90012.  For more info & mural tix, go HERE.

Burbank is beautiful...and funny!
Burbank is beautiful…and funny!

Bustin’ up in Burbank

People of a certain age and/or fans of retro TV might remember the tongue-in-cheek phrase “beautiful downtown Burbank” from Laugh In and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Starting Sunday, beautiful downtown Burbank will be a reality for comics and the fans who love them.

Part seven-day stand-up-palooza, part mini-boot camp for aspiring and working comics alike, the  Burbank Comedy Festival features headliners Adam Carolla, Jeff Garlin and Wendy Liebman and “200 emerging comics” — a category that includes seen-all-around-town comedians such as Jackie Kashian, Samuel J Comroe and writer/performers Fielding Edlow and Josefina Lopez.

In addition to the multiple shows, sign up for after-parties, panels, podcasts (e.g. Adam Carolla with Whitney Cummings), and “underground showcases”:  unprogrammed open mic opportunities available to anyone with the chutzpah to perform in front of some of the funniest people in the biz.

Want to buff up your one-liners before hitting the open mic?

Sign up for one of the Fest’s ten classes including Joke Lab, Improv for Comics, and Using Your Comedic Character to Get a Sitcom.

Just remember, aspiring comedians: luck is opportunity meets preparation, not perspiration.

BURBANK COMEDY FESTIVAL —  Sun, Aug 17 – Fri, Aug 23; various times & locations.  $15 – $699 (VIP Pass).  For more info and to buy tix, go HERE.
