The Weekend Go Go: English as a Second Language, Light the World, Don the Beachcomber + More

Speak what you want...just dance!
Speak what you want…just dance!

June July gloom is over.

Your Slip ‘n Slide is primed.

Your Portable Instant Cocktail Refresher?  Patent pending.

Time to get this summer started….

Fun with ESL

It’s not summer without an outdoor music concert and Eastside Luv wine bar y QueSo, one of Ms. Go Go’s fave Gold Line-adjacent venues, is throwing a great one this Friday:  English as a Second Language.

You won’t need a textbook to translate.

Yes, music is the universal language (duh) but your hips and feet will do the real talking with producer Guillermo Uribe‘s triple bill of Trio Ellas (Lady Gaga), the Villalobos Brothers (Carnegie Hall), and hometown faves The Blue Agave.

But wait, it gets better.

How, how, HOW could it get better, you say, especially since you can bring beer, wine and your fave al fresco fare to the Ford Amphitheatre?

Special guests La Marisoul and Pepe Carlos of the Grammy Award-winning La Santa Cecilia, that’s how!

Yes, it’s true!

Go Go’ers, just say si  to fun.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGEFri, July 25 @ 8pm. $16 – $40Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd East, Hollywood 90068.  For tix & info, go HERE.

Where to wear your fairy wings....
Light it up, Los Angeles!

Midsummer Night’s Gleam

Is your idea of summer is sultry music, scantily dressed performers,  and crazy headresses?

If so, you’ll love the Lucent Dossier Experience‘s Light of the World Tour, which will be spreading the love and promoting their upcoming Light of the World album at Club Nokia.

Fresh off headlining the Gobi stage at Coachella, the high-energy, high-fashion, avant-garde performance troupe of aerielists, acrobats, and contortionists teams up with The Human Experience: the passion project of live electronic composer/multi-instrumentalist/producer David Block with featured singer Haley Reinhart.

Are you experienced?  You will be after Saturday night’s eastern-inspired show.

DJ Nico Luminous makes it even more of a party with his signature “Glitch-a-Delic Soul Whomp”.

And Go Go’ers,  if you’re going to have a signature soul whomp….

LUCENT DOSSIER EXPERIENCE “LIGHT OF THE WORLD” — Sat, July 26  @ 8pm.  $25; all ages Club Nokia at L.A. Live, 800 W Olympic Blvd, A335 DTLA 90015.  For more info and tix, go HERE.

Tiki Ti One On

If you’re mai tai curious — and really, who isn’t — you’ll want to head over to Hollywood this Sunday for  Don the Beachcomber & the Origins of the American Tiki Bar.

“If you can’t get to Paradise, I’ll bring it to you.”

So said Donn Beach, former bootlegger, inveterate wanderer, and  raffish father of tiki culture via his iconic bar and restaurant Don the Beachcomber.

Donn’s original palace of accessible exotic opened  on McCadden Place, right across the street from the Egyptian Theater where Sven Kirsten,  contemporary pundit of  Polynesian-inspired pop culture, will sign his newest book Tiki Pop.  Kirsten will also give an illustrated presentation about Beach who is credited with creating over 80 (mostly) rum based drinks.

Clearly, Donn was a giant among men who deserves his own national holiday.

One of Beach’s legendary concoctions — the Zombie — was allegedly so strong, guests were limited to two a night. Guests 21 and over will have a chance to taste the devastating rum drink before a screening of Enchanted Island: a Technicolor adaptation of Herman Melville’s novel Typee.

Movie tag line: “He dared to love a cannibal princess.”

Cocktail tag line: One Zombie and so will you.

DON THE BEACHCOMBER & THE ORIGINS OF THE AMERICAN TIKI BAR; ENCHANTED ISLANDSun, July 27 @ 4pm; movie @ 5:30. $7 – $11 Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 90028.  For more info & tix, go HERE.
