Go Go’ers, Mother’s Day weekend approaches and it’s going to be fun.
If the above statement seems too good to be true, rest assured that no lace doilies or creepy porcelain dolls are involved.
Basically, it’s your usual weekend with a higher percentage of take-along-Mom potential.
No beady doll eyes…Go Go guaranteed.
You Say You Want a Revolution
They just want to change the world…the wine world, that is.
You’ll want to be on the front line of intrepid imbibers when Wine Riot returns this Friday and Saturday with 250 wines from around the world, a “GoVino” glass to sample them, wine gurus to give you the veritas about the vino, and a mobile app to track your 250 new faves and tell you where to buy them when you recover.
Which you will…eventually.
Since it’s a party not a class, of course there will be a DJ, temp tattoos, a photo booth to flaunt them, and food options from local vendors for a few extra bucks.
Think of the latter as rebel insurance.
WINE RIOT LA 2014 – SPRING — Fri, May 9, 7-11pm and Sat, May 10, 1-5pm & 7-11pm. $60/21+ — California Market Center, 110 E 9th St, LA 90070 More info & tix HERE

pARTy in the Hood – Part 1
Have you promised la mere more face time? Bring her along to these art-tastic events for some pre-Mom’s Day one-on-one.
NELAart Second Saturday Gallery Night is always dancing through the streets and this Saturday, Figueroa is the Second Saturday epicenter of fun.
Start the evening at the 1st Anniversary Extravaganza of the Cypress Village (underground) Tunnel Art Walk. The title may be a mouthful but it reflects the exuberance of community involvement.
The pedestrian tunnel, one of many built under busy streets to get kids safely to and from school, was closed for years because of gang activity until Yancey Quinones, long-time Cypress Park resident and owner of Antigua Coffee House, spearheaded the reopening and repurposing of the tunnel as an art gallery a year ago.
The block party bash is curated by educator/community activist Gary de la Rosa who was involved in the inaugural event. Conrad Romo, founder of the monthly literary variety show Tongue & Groove, Jessica Ceballos (founder of the local Bluebird Reading Series) and Eric Etzli will be featured during the Spoken Word portion of the evening.
Art Meza, whose photographs are featured in the book LoWriting, will exhibit; Meza also coordinated artists and will arrange “a car and food theme connection to his work as in Low-Riders and a Taco truck.”
Go Go’ers, it takes a village to make an art show.
1ST ANNIVERSARY EXTRAVAGANZA OF THE CYPRESS VILLAGE (underground) TUNNEL ART WALK — Sat, May 10 @ 5:30 pm/Spoken Word @ 7:30 pm. FREE/all ages — 3400 N Figueroa, LA 90065. More info HERE.

pARTy in the Hood – Part 2
Go Go’ers, the Figueroa fun continues….
Head up the street, hang a left at Avenue 50.
In the Main Gallery at heart-of-community Avenue 50 Studios, Raoul de la Sota, whose many accomplishments include being the first Chicano artist to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, will be exhibiting El Camino: A Journey: 30 lyrical paintings inspired by his recent travels through Spain and Portugal along the famed pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago.
In the Annex, marvel at fiber artist Connie Rohman‘s Lost Languages. The pieces feature fabric-and-thread renditions of Morse code, Gregg Shorthand, and other now-forgotten ways to communicate. Not only are Rohman’s hand-dyed, jewel-toned pieces gorgeous to look at, the hidden messages are fascinating to puzzle out. Your mom may even be able to read that shorthand.
Give your mom the opportunity to show off….
EL CAMINO: A JOURNEY & LOST LANGUAGES — Sat, May 10 @ 7PM. FREE/All ages — Avenue 50 Studios, 131 N Avenue 50, LA 90042. More info HERE.
