What’s the weekend like?
Lots of laughs. Mucho music.
Plenty of fun.
Wayne’s Movie Fest
Between Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Comedy Central, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and writing jokes for the Milton Bradley game Taboo, writer/actor/comedian Wayne Federman knows funny and so do his pals.
And so will you…..
Starting Thursday, host Federman and his comedian cronies take you to the movies at The Third Annual Wayne Federman International Film Festival. Doug Benson, Kathy Griffin, Taylor Negron, T.J. Miller, Jimmy Pardo, and Jeff Garlin not only pick and introduce their fave/most influential film, they perform and participate in a Q&A afterward.
Go Go’ers, choose your Q&A queries wisely.
The Cinefamily event — billed as “the world’s most prestigious film festival” — is your chance to get inside the psyches of Federman’s funny friends. Why does Kathy Griffin love The Dead Zone? Are we surprised “professional alcoholic” T.J. Miller picked The Bank Dick with W.C. Fields? Does the choice of Boogie Nights mean a cigar is just a cigar for Doug Benson?
Enquiring minds want to know….
THE THIRD ANNUAL WAYNE FEDERMAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL — Thurs, May 1 – Sun, May 4; various times. $12 per film — The Cinefamily, 611 N Fairfax, LA 90036 Info, times & tix HERE.
Just in time for the Groundlings 40th Anniversary in May comes the return of Charlotte’s Shorts.
Go Go’ers, this is not a show about a web-spelling spider wearing Daisy Dukes but an hour of comedic short stories written by author/artist/non-arachnid Charlotte Dean.
The show at Theatre Banshee is something of a family affair; Dean co-directs with her mother Tracy Newman: a founding member of the Groundlings (as well as Emmy award-winning writer and musician). Rounding out the trio of familial funny ladies is performer Laraine Newman: Dean’s aunt, original cast member of Saturday Night Live, and also a founding Groundling member.
Say that ten times fast.
Laraine will be performing Dean’s work along with current and former Groundlings including: Tim Bagley, Lynne Marie Stewart, Jonathan Stark, Jeremy Rowley, Jordan Black, and Bridget Sienna. Tickets for the weekend-only show are going fast so don’t delay.
Don’t forget to say Happy Anniversary….
CHARLOTTE’S SHORTS — Fri, May 2 & Sat, May 3 at 8pm; Sun, May 4 at 3pm. $20; 14+ — Theatre Banshee, 3435 W Magnolia Blvd, Burbank 91505. Info & tix HERE.
South by South Pasadena
Go Go’ers, shake your didn’t-make-it-to-Austin, couldn’t-afford-Coachella, who-can-get-to-Bonnaroo-anyway blues.
The sights and sounds are poppin’ in South Pasadena this Saturday so hop on the Gold Line for the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk.
The music in the San Gabriel Valley’s Mayberry is particularly femme-tastic this year starting with the headliner, indie/folk artist Elyza Gilkyson. Performing with Gilkyson is her brother Tony Gilkyson, formerly of Lone Justice and X.
Eliza Gilkyson’s album The Land of Milk and Honey was nominated for a Grammy; her songs have been covered by Joan Baez, Bob Geldof, Tom Rush and Rosanne Cash.
Other must-see music-makers include smart pop-noirest Anny Celsi, shivery-good, tenor ukelele-playing soul singer Aireene Espiritu and haunting acoustic from the duo Powdercoat. Jazz composer/pianist Billy Childs will be joined by singer Moira Smiley on his Songs of Laura Nyro project, which Childs will perform at the 2014 Monterey Jazz Festival.
Don’t miss this chance for “heard it back when” bragging rights.
You also want to catch up-and-comer Phoebe Bridgers and KCRW-endorsed Charley Hickey at the Emerging Artists Stage at BurkeTriolo, , which just happens to be one of Ms. Go Go’s fave SoPas art studios. Also check out narrative collage artist Karen Greene and Isaura String Quartet at SPACE and/or collaborate on a community Art & Music mural with Art/Work/Place and the Green Brooms Academy. And singletons will want to head to South Pasadena Mercantile for a Singles Only Art Party and Portrait Drawing.
It’s a chance to wear your heart on your sleeve AND your sketch pad.
