The Weekend Go Go: Comics Two Ways, Cat Scratch Fever, Your Week to Drink

See you later, gator; Friday at Trepany House to be exact.
See you later, gator — Friday at Trepany House to be exact.

This weekend, others around the country may be calculating the ratio of wind chill factor to hot whisky toddies but lucky Angelenos like you can just put on your cargo shorts and go.

Note:  hot toddies still an option.

Funny People.  Funny Pictures.  Free Beer.

Artists benefit from a muse.  Comedians benefit from an audience.

Friday’s Picture This! at  Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater solves both those issues by bringing the two together PLUS giving you a chance to kick off your shoes and kick off your weekend.

The program:

Stand-up comedians do their thing.

Artists do their thing and sketch the comics.

You do your thing and drink free beer.

The results are unpredictable but evidently, the artists are occasionally unicorns (go figure) and an alligator sometimes performs in high heels and a bra (see above left).

This may or may not have anything to do with the free beer.

Even without mythical beasts, you’ll have a blast; Brandie Posey (Lady to Lady) hosts; comics include Baron Vaughn (Fairly Legal), Alice Wetterlund (Girl Code) and Dana Gould (HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central); among the sketch artists are Angelo Hatgistavrou (Bob’s Burgers), Phylicia Fuentes (China, IL) and Grif Kimmins (Freaknik).

And if an alligator wearing a bra shows up, well…you were warned.

I Can Haz Art Show?

Go Go’ers, you don’t have to leave your “pirouetting cat” memes at the door this Saturday at the Cat Art Show| Los Angeles.

You will have to leave your cat at home.

Not to worry; you’ll have plenty of felines to fixate on.  The two-weekend exhibit  (through February 2) opens with a reception this Saturday evening and  features a meow mix of work by 70+ internationally celebrated artists including Tracey Emin, Shepard Fairey, Gary Baseman, FAILE, and Ray Caesar.

Even if you’re not an aficionado of the furry — many of the artists are self-described “dog people” and/or allergic to cats — you’ll want to consider adding some of these  glam pieces to your collection; all art is for sale and proceeds benefit the Stay Cat Alliance.

Really have Cat Scratch Fever?

Start off the afternoon at the Internet Cat Video Festival at The Echoplex with feline Interweb stars Grumpy Cat, Cat Museum, and Keyboard in attendance.

There’s also a cat-themed costume contest.  Of course.

How to Cocktail

Go Go’ers, you’ll want to clear your drinking schedule next week.

The inaugural Golden State of Cocktails,  a bar industry convention founded by Skyler Reeves, Director of Operations at 213 Nightlife, and Allison Levine of Please the Palate, launches Monday with a special Happy Hour and two pub crawls open to the consumer.

Happily, the consumer is you.

Start your week of dedicated cocktail consumption on Monday, January 27th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the GSC No-Host Happy Hour  at the brand-new, hotter-than-hot Ace Hotel  (929 South Broadway, DTLA 90015) where you’ll rub elbows and clink glasses with bar industry pros over special — and specially priced — cocktails.

Or, rub glasses and clink elbows.  It’s up to you.

Sponsored by Imbibe Magazine, each of the pub crawls features $4 cocktails available only during the GSC scheduled stops; each libation highlights a specific brand such as Basil Hayden, Pisco Porton, and Glenrothes.

The schedule for the Downtown L.A. Bar Crawl on Tuesday, January 28th is: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Villain’s Tavern; 8:30pm – 10:30pm Las Perlas; 10:30pm – 12am King Eddy Saloon; and 12am – 2am Honeycut.

The schedule for the Hollywood Bar Crawl on Wednesday, January 29th is: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Spare Room; 8:30pm – 10:30pm Sadie; 10:30pm – 12am No Vacancy; and 12am – 2am Sassafrass.

Worried you’ll actually be crawling during the crawls?   Fear not — wheels await.

Shuttles will depart at 6:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday from the LA Times Building (202 W 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90012) and run to and from each bar.  On Wednesday night, the shuttle will return to the Millennium Biltmore Hotel (506 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90071) at the end of the night from Hollywood.  NO shuttle to/from the Happy Hour.

Best of all, no advance tickets or reservations are required.

Here’s to spontaneous drinking….
