The Weekend Go Go: Cancan Oui!, Go Glow, Thai Taste, Goodbye Grand Ole Echo

It’s one of those weekends…EVERYTHING is happening all over town.

Since cloning is not an option (yet), you’ll want to stock up on your preferred energy booster whether Red Bull, Red Vines, wheat grass, or coffee (oh hey, Stumptown!)

Go Go’ers, this weekend, the Energizer Bunny is you.

Musique de Sexy

These days, burlesque is ubiquitous (Hurray!) but Parisian Cancan, the dance that started the sexy is still scarce. (Boo.)

Enter Cabaret Versatilethe authentic Parisian revue that high kicked its way into Angelenos’ hearts at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2012 where they were nominated for Best International Show.  This Friday night, the frou-frou’ed  femmes, lead by dancer, choreographer and creator Lola Ohlala, will bring their black-stocking-and-ruffles cabaret to Bar Fedora at First and Hope Supper Club.

Seating is tres intime.  Lucky you.

Cancan translates as “scandal” in French and while “les demoiselles du Fedora”  might not have the gendarmes storming the stage as they did back in the days of the Moulin Rouge,  the winners of the Best Variety and Cabaret Show at the 2012 Fringe Fest deliver enough ooh-la-la to cause a riot.

Just say “oui”.

CABARET VERSATILE — Fri, Sept 27; 7:30pm door, 9pm show; $20 online until midnight 9/26 – $25 @ door — Bar Fedora  @ First & Hope Supper Club, 710 W First St, DTLA, 90012.

Every Three Years…Glow

Glowing jellyfish.  An electric octopus mandala.  A wishing well filled with bioluminescent plankton.

The above are not the failed experiments of a mad marine biologist but just a few of the site-specific, light-the-night installations at GLOW, the FREE, Saturday-night-only art fest on the Santa Monica Beach and environs.  The end-of-summer event, which only takes place every three years, is an all-night, participatory art playground for the public.

Don’t expect sailboat paintings and pottery mugs.

This is Big Deal Art on a grand scale. Artist and TED lecturer Janet Echelman will install The Space Between Us: one of her astonishing, eerily ethereal net sculptures. French artist-in-residence Mathieu Briand brings 6:34 p.m., an out-of-time mystery chamber and ring of fire to the sands of Santa Monica.  Patrick Scott  and  Jacaranda Music On the Edge collaborate on The Rest Is Noise: A Ride Through the 20th Century on the Santa Monica Pier carousel with a century’s worth of musical snippets.

Go Go’ers, no need to bring a glow stick.

You will, however, want to download Glow’s Essential Apps, which include an interactive festival soundscape curated by KCRW DJs and an interactive app that immerses you in Steve Boyer’s Colorfields and makes you part of the art via your smart phone.

Oh, the places you’ll Glow.

This weekend, Ms. Go Go’s happiest place on earth won’t be the House of Mickey but BKK 2 LAX: the inaugural Thai 2013 Food Festival.  Los Angeles is home to the largest Thai population outside of Thailand and on Sunday, Paramount Pictures Studios will be the Tinsel Town epicenter of sanuk phet (spicy fun).

Culinary dynamo Jet Tila, inaugural Thai culinary ambassador to the U.S. and the unofficial Mayor of Thai Town, has curated the event with his usual enthusiastic gusto.  Celebrity chef pals in attendance include: Sang Yoon (Lukshon), David LeFevre (MB Post/Fishing with Dynamite), Kajsa Alger and Susan Feniger (Susan Feniger’s Street), Andy Ricker (Pok Pok, Portland/NY), Curtis Stone (Top Chef Masters), Evan Kleiman (KCRW’s Good Food), and Kris Yenbamroong (Night + Market).

Of course, there will be Singha beer.  On his website, Yenbamroong says Night + Market’s street food is aharn klam lao, which translates as “food to facilitate drinking”.  In other words, Yenbamroong and his crew make “food for drunkards.”

You’re in love.

Thailand has four, distinct food regions — Southern, Northern, Northeastern, and  Bangkok/Central Thailand — and all will be represented via Tila’s ten, fave, SoCal Thai restaurants.  In addition to well-known restos like Jitlada, Ruen Pair, Sapp and Siam Sunset, you’ll have the opportunity to check out fab, farther afield spots like Lucky Elephant, Lum-Ka-Naad, and the lovely, serene, and sustainable Ayara.

These are Jet Tila’s Top Ten, people!

In addition to the fab food, you can look forward to all kinds of traditional Thai culture: Thai dance, Muay Thai boxing demos, fruit carving, and umbrella painting.

Luckily, there’s also Thai traditional massage demos.  Because that umbrella painting can be hella stressful.

The End of Summer.  Really.

What’s your symbolic End of Summer?

The start of school?  The final day of wearing flip-flops?

The last bottle of your stockpiled summer IPA?

For Ms. Go Go, it’s the last Grand Ole Echo of the season and this Sunday, the end of summer has come.

Luckily, GOE producer Kim Grant throws the best party in town so yours truly won’t be weeping in her whisky.

Debuting their new CD are headliners and “New Countrypoplitans” David Serby and the Latest Scam — with Ed Tree, Gregory Boaz, and Dale Daniel.  Get there early: these guys are big faves on the scene and rightly so.  You want to jump and jive, not push and shove crowds.

Folk rockers Son Ark open the show with twist-your-heart lyrics, rising Americana star Greg Felden keeps it quality, and The Groovy Rednecks  make the last patio perf of summer count.

What a way to send off the season.
