The Weekend Go Go – Part 1: LA Times The Taste — Fun with Food and Drink

So. Much. Good Food.
Cocktails.  Beer.  Food.

How to Drink & Eat Los Angeles in a Weekend:

Go Go’ers, whether you’re staycationing or hosting visitors, you have a few choices this weekend:

1. The Beach — Pros: Sand, surf, sun!   Cons:  Crowds, freeway gridlock, sandy snacks.

2.  Theme Park —  Pros: Thrills, spills, chills!  Cons:  Crowds, freeway gridlock, expensive snacks.

3. Homes of Stars Tour with Out-of-Town Relatives — Pros: A knowledgeable guide, possible celeb sightings, so much glamour! Cons:  Automatic dorkdom.

4.  LA Times THE TASTE — Pros: L.A.’s best booze, beer, dishes and desserts in one place, a foodie party on the Paramount Pictures back lot, a uniquely SoCal experience   Cons: You could have too much fun.

NOTE: If #4 appeals (of course it does), you’ll want to move fast; individual events are already selling out and ticket prices go up tomorrow, Friday, August 30.

Tickets for individual events cover food and drink tastings from numerous L.A. restaurants; you could spend months of time, energy, and money to check them all out on your own so you’re actually saving money.

Not to mention avoiding dorkdom.

Field to Fork

If you’re passionate about home cooking, sustainable foods, and celebrity chefs, you’ll want to check out THE TASTE’s first morning event on Saturday. Providence‘s Michael Cimarusti (“Best L.A. Restaurant”, Jonathan Gold) hosts with LAT Food Editor Russ Parsons; the two will lead a panel discussion on sustainable seafood along with Mary Smith from Santa Monica Seafood and Sheila Bowman from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Your shrimp balls will rock.

Learn tricks of the trade at cooking demos by Cimarusti, Alma‘s Ari Taymor (“Best New Restaurant in America”, Bon Appetit),  pastry chef Sherry Yard (formerly Spago, imminent Helms Bakery), and Ray Garcia (Fig).  In between demos, sample bites from restaurants such as Canele, good girl dinette, and Sweets for the Soul and booze from dozens of spirit suppliers including Crop Vodka, TY KY Sake, and Karma Tequila.

Sustainable eating and drinking,  Fun life.

Labor Day Block Party

Go whole hog with the whole family at the first Sunday morning event where kids 3-12 get in for $5!

LAT Test Kitchen Director Noelle Carter, who co-hosts the Block Party with Mozza’s Nancy Silverton, will roast an entire porker as well as lead a panel discussion on competition ‘que with Ryan Chester of The Rub Co., Neil Strawder of Bigmista’s barbecue, and “Lady of Q” Sylvie Curry who cooks on a Backwoods Smoker mounted on a 20 ft. BBQ trailer.

Prepare for grill envy.

Silverton, Evan Kleiman (KCRW), and Fred Eric (D’elish) will cook.  LAT columnist Steve Lopez will bring back his Firehouse Cookoff for a little reality TV-type tension.  You will eat food from restaurants such as Chichen ItzaJinya Ramen Bar, and Rosebud Cakes and sample drinks from purveyors including Caorunn Gin, Goose Island Beer, and Tequila Semental.

Bring on the heat.

Cocktail Confidential

THE TASTE’s Sunday night closer is a strictly adult affair.  LAT Deputy Food Editor Betty Hallock and Destination Cocktail columnist Jessica Gelt will co-host with mixologist Matthew Biancaniello, who’s known for his food-based cocktails.

Ms. Go Go fondly recalls a Biancaniello pop-up at the Westside Scoops.

A Cocktail Confidential highlight: the “Wild & Fresh: Craft Cocktail Demo” with Biancaniello, Serena Herrick (Allumette), Christiaan Rollich (Lucques/A.O.C./Tavern) and Brady Weise (1886).

Wild & Fresh: sounds like you.

Other food/ mixology demos feature Octavio Becerro and Josh Goldman of the recently debuted Acabar, John Sedlar and Julian Cox  of RiveraHinoki & the Bird‘s Kuniko Yagi and Brandyn Tepper, and Ink‘s Michael Voltagio and Gabriella Mlynarczyk.

Nom nom from the likes of Jitlada Scratch/Bar, and Zengo will keep you grounded while spirits such as Bullleit Bourbon, Plantation Rum, and Mell Vodka will get you primed.

Good thing Monday’s a holiday.
