The Weekend Go Go: A Happening, A Tunnel of Love, Sexy Words, Flapjacks, Everything is Fun!

It's all happening here.
It’s all happening here.

There are stories told with words.  Stories that are sung.  Stories on the big screen.

Also, pancakes.

All in all, it’s a pretty tasty weekend.

Folk Music, Killer House

Folk music venues aren’t what they used to be.

Mention the genre and most people think of poorly lit coffee houses reeking of cigarettes and oh-the-humanity.   But Saturday’s New L.A. Folk Fest “Happening” takes place at Historical Monument 157, a.k.a. the 1896 home of the “jovial and good-natured”  Horace Dibble who fatally stabbed a colleague whose eyes “sparkled like a demon”.

The guy had Betty Demon Eyes.

Happily, the venue for Daiana Feuer’s New L.A. Folk  Fest “happening” — a return to its Fest roots — is more down home than Dexter.  A fundraiser for the fest and a benefit for the California State Park’s Foundation, the dozen-bands-and-counting line-up  features the SoCal folk scene’s finest including   Kirpatrick Thomas of Spindrift, Willie Watson, formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show, White Dove,  Wicklow Atwater & the Fallen Flame, and Bloody Death Skull.  RSVP required for music, free drinks, and “other goodies”.

Yes, there will be twinkling lights.

No, there won’t be glinty devil peepers.

NEW L.A. FOLK FEST “HAPPENING” Sat, Aug 10, 3pm – 1am; $20 — RSVP required via Facebook or  email lafolkfest@gmail.comHistorical Monument 157, 3110 N Broadway, LA 90031

The Underground Seen

Remember when you were a kid and you crossed UNDER the street to get to school and it was exciting and cool and kind of like you were a spy on a dangerous secret mission?  And then it really did get scary under there?

Now, under-street tunnels are cool again.

Find out just how cool at This Magnificent Worldthe third Cypress Village Tunnel Art Walk, which transforms the underground crossing of your childhood into the art/music/poetry scene of your now.

Community builder/innovator Yancey Quinones of Antigua Coffee Gallery  led the battle to get the tunnel open and turn it (and other tunnels in L.A.) into corridors of culture ; poet Jessica Ceballos (Poesia Para la Gente) curates the August show, which features music by el-haru kuroi, poetry by word spinners such as Annette Cruz and Just Kibbe and his poetry car,  art by Billy Burgos, Cakeshop Oddities, and Jason Macaya among others, and cupcakes with the flavor of Mexico from Viva Los Cupcakes.

Two Margarita y Mole cupcakes for Ms. Go Go, please.

And if the above wasn’t exciting enough, a Kia Soul 2013 will be raffled off to benefit the local Mt. Washington Elementary School.

Just don’t have too many Kahlua cupcakes and try to drive your new Kia through the tunnel.

THIS MAGNIFICENT WORLDSat, Aug 10, 6-10pm FREE —  Antigua Coffee House, 3400 Figueroa St, LA 90065. Tunnel is at corner of Figueroa & Loreto across from Nightingale Middle School

More Lust or Love? You be the judge.
Never enough Lust and Love.

The (Other Two) L Words

Previously, you went to the Westside for funny sex.

Starting this Saturday, however, Anna David’s True Tales of Lust and Love from Writers and Comedians moves to Hollywood’s M Bar for M’m! M’m Good confessions of  fun and flops between the sheets not to mention smokey clubs, sex emporiums, and the back seats of cars.

With its red velvet curtains and frosted mirrors, the bordello-like M Bar is the perfect setting for these saucy and salacious tales whose tellers include Fielding Edlow (Sugar Daddy), Claire Titelman (Chelsea Lately), Jillian Lauren (Some Girls) and Jackie Kashian (Conan).

Let’s just say these femmes won’t leave you high and dry.

Why is this pancake smiing?

A Panoply of Pancakes

Flapjack, griddle cake, hot cake, johnny cake; a pancake by any other name tastes as sweet.

Although eating a “Dutch baby”?  Conceptually, kind of creepy….

Regardless, carb loaders, sugar junkies, and aficionados of the Most Important Meal of the Day  will want to snap up tickets for the L.A. Weekly‘s 3rd Annual Pancake Breakfast at Vibiana downtown.  Curated by Evan Kleiman, Sunday’s 20+ degustation stations include breakfast bites from Redbird, Canele, Good Girl Dinette, and Nickel Diner to name just a few.

Bouffant-ed chanteuse Lynda Kay will serenade you over your maple syrup, a  hosted bar amplifies the sugar buzz, a portion of the proceeds goes to Project Angel Food, and you take home a Limited Edition coffee cup.

All in all,  a great way to spend a Sunday.

Especially when you figure in your three-hour, post-pancake nap.

Everything is Now

Everything is Festival 4: the Dreamquest might warrant a staycation.  Or you may need to come down with a long, lingering, seven-day illness that can only be cured by liberal doses of top-drawer comedians, obscure movies, cute animal baby footage (Slow lorias, everybody!), and Joey Buttafuoco.

The medicinal Joey Buttafuoco, of course.

Billed as “An annual celebration of all things art/music/film/found footage/awesome”, the week-long  Festival, which begins Monday, is a co-production between alt-culture powerhouses Cinefamily and Everything is Terrible. The seven days of awesome include but are by no means limited to: a Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen (a narrative feature of found-footage from other movies);  a Show & Tell through the life and times of comedian Maria Bamford (a Judd Apatow fave); and an Island of Misfit Videos exhibit.

Lost teddy bears WILL make an appearance.

Additional dementia includes a triple feature of movies about  “Long Island Lolita” Amy Fisher (with Joey Buttafuoco in person!), a VHS swap party, and a Fest Special/sneak preview of the musical episode of IFC hit Comedy Bang Bang (with host Scott Aukerman and special guests).

Go Go’ers, get your doctor’s note ready now.
