Halloween. It’s not a holiday, it’s a mini-season.
To make sure you get your fill of fun and fright , Ms. Go Go presents a long list of short and sweet picks for a week of witches and wolfbane, ghoulies and ghosts.
Keep that hip flask filled with spirits.
Catch Your Breath (Thurs 10-25- Sun 10-28 @ various times; Barlow Respiratory Hospital; $25-$100) — There’s something inherently shivery about abandoned hospitals; no matter how bright, it’s hard not to think about resident ghosts wandering in search of final moments and last gasps. The dynamic Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre should stir up plenty of both with their newest work at the historic, 110-year-old Barlow Respiratory Hospital: a fin de siecle tuberculosis sanatorium.
Just remember, every breath you take…they‘ll be watching you.
Lucha Va Voom: Aztec Horror (Fri 10-26 @ 8pm; Mayan Theater; $45; 21+) — With its macho Mexican wrestlers, slinky burlesque queens, and snide comic commentators, Lucha Va Voom‘s Sexo y Violencia is the ultimate TGIF event to let off steam and kick off the weekend. Add in the Aztec Horror theme — think sexy mummies, ghost chickens, and the Attack of the Haunted Hairdo — at the Mayan Theater and the world just might end early this Friday.
Let the Aztec eye beam blasts begin…!
13th Annual Dia de los Muertos @ Hollywood Forever Cemetery (Sat 10-27, noon-midnight; Hollywood Forever Cemetery; Free-$10)— Just in case the end of the world is nigh this December, you’ll want to make nice with those who have gone before. The ancestors are sure to get out the welcome mat if you serenade them with Ozomatli, La Santa Cecilia, Very Be Careful, Las Cafeteras, and Tribu. Add some art, Aztec dancing, and a food vendor offering to honored relatives and Favorite Son (or Daughter) status is assured.
It’s never too early to hedge your bets with the after-life.
9th Annual Halloween & Mourning Tours at Heritage Square (Sat 10-27 & Sun 10-28, noon-4pm; Heritage Square Museum; Free-$10) — Nobody celebrated the dearly departed as vigorously as the Victorians with their elaborate etiquette of mourning. If you want a more genteel tour of death, head over to the Heritage Square Museum where you can attend a turn-of-the-century funeral in a historic home, find out about Spiritualism (Arthur Conan Doyle a fan! Houdini a skeptic!), and have your future told by a fortune teller.
Ask her if you’ll make it through Halloween without dying…of exhaustion
Music of the Macabre: Dexter Composer Daniel Licht & Special Guests (Mon 10-29 @ 8pm; Largo Theater; $25– It’s a known fact that blood is creepier with music especially if it’s composed by Daniel Licht (Dexter, Hellraiser, Thinner). Head over to the Largo to get the mood music soundtrack for your Season of the Witch with this one-night-only concert featuring Licht leading an orchestra that includes Dexter cast members; Dexter himself (Michael C. Hall) emcee’d last year’s show.
Dark Passengers, your flight to the bloodfest is departing.
2nd Annual Aliens to Zombies Convention (Mon 10-29, 9-11pm & Tues 10-30, 6-11pm, W Hotel; $10) — Hollywood’s only Halloween horror convention gets you ramped up for the Big One with two nights of film festivals and a Tuesday night Costume Contest judged by the cast of SyFy’s Monster Man (6:30-7:30 p.m.) Whether or not you participate in the contest, a sartorially transformed you translates to FREE admission to the convention on October 30th. Plus, panels with pros such as Matt Mogk, founder of the Zombie Research Society.

Halloween — Downtown Drinks to Wake the Dead
There’s always a Halloween hullaboo in Hollywood but if you prefer your spirits with the Ghosts of Halloween Past, it’s best to go where the City of Angels began.
Cabaret de L’Enfer at the Edison ( Wed 10-31 @7pm; $25-$35) — In addition to artisanal cocktails in the always slightly unsettling steampunk setting, the Edison’s Halloween Cabaret de L’Enfer will feature “Extraordinary Selection of Attractions Diaboliques featuring Gifted Eccentriques from across the globe”.
