If you been feeling like Sunset Junction has become too commercial/crowded/expensive/disorganized and/or annoying (Pick one, more, or all.) then head for the NELA hills this Saturday where the 12th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival puts the neighbor back in the ‘hood with its diverse lineup of 50+ local bands and DJs. The twelve venues range from a 96-year-old women’s club (the club is 96, not the women) to a motel balcony (notes between naps?) to an auto shop…which may give new meaning to the term “heavy metal”.
Just a few of the many highlights of the 4 – 11PM fest are experimental DJ sets by Dublab founder Frosty plus The Egyptian Lover & Arabian Prince, the Latin rhythms of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, indie folk quartet Hi Ho Silver Oh, Southern stoked California roots rockers Drunk on Crutches, vintage popsters the Submarines, Pay the Man (with Raymond Pettibon) and Dustbowl Revival‘s hillbilly jazz on the Kid’s Stage (Lucky kids. Even luckier parents.)
You’d probably pay to see these bands but the Eagle Rock extravaganza is intent on keeping it real…and free! A donation of five bucks is suggested but no one will be turned away because they can’t pay. Eagle Rock’s eclectic range of merchants will be open for business during the festival (but bring cash ’cause the area is ATM-lite) and the festival provides an eco (and neighbor) friendly transportation option; park at the nearby Eagle Rock Plaza and grab the shuttle bus to fun.
Always your preferred destination.
