Pink Champagne. Sex, Violence and the KKK. Mommy with a Penis. All of the above can undoubtedly be found at various times on Hollywood Boulevard, especially at Halloween, and very possibly during every full moon.
You’ll be able to find them with far more frequency, however, between June 17 and 27 during the First Annual Hollywood Fringe Festival; the aforementioned titles are three of the 176 nonjuried productions playing over 10 days at 40 locations (including theaters, church grounds, and a beauty parlor) around the heart of Hollywood. In other words, Go Go’ers, walk briskly.
The productions range from classic works (Euripides’ Medea) to original plays (A Picnic at the Asylum), sketch comedy (8 Bits: A Sketch Show About Video Games) to musicals (That Great and Dreadful Day: Tall Tales from the American Swamp), circus/cabaret (FreakShow Deluxe) to music (Poxy Boggards) to dance (Mental Head Circus), and impossible-to-categorize projects like Presque Pret a Porter in which designer/sculptor/costumier A. Laura Brody redesigns a donated garment for you at “Beauty of Pain: the rock and roll/fetish/counter-culture house of fashion.” Ms. Go Go is SO there….
There are audience participation events, such as U-SICAL, an improvised-on-the-spot musical based on an audience member’s life (You might want to tidy up your on-line profile pre-show…wink, wink!), and The Deadly Sin Bingo Show (Yes! YOU can win Heavenly Virtue prizes!), free events (A.S.A.P. Fables, which is written and rehearsed in the 48 hours before the performance) and even a Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Now That She’s Gone by Pasadena Weekly/Huffington Post columnist Ellen Snortland about her late mother. Rumor has it, lutefisk is involved.
Finally, there’s Antonio Sacre‘s My Penis – In and Out of Trouble. Which, come to think of it, might be found with the MOST frequency on Hollywood Boulevard. Full moon or no….
