The 5th Ever Los Angeles Old Time Social - May 13 - 15
The future is so…yesterday. If you’re yearning for the days when fashion and fun meant calico and clogging, make a date with your best beau (or your best buddies) for the 5th Ever Los Angeles Old Time Social.
Taking place all over town, the Social kicks off Thursday night in the best way possible with a FREE concert at the Hyperion Tavern. Olentangy John, Cat Tracks, and The Mosby Raiders demonstrate Old Time string theory with a whole lot of banjo, mandolin and fiddle.
On Friday, treat your eyes and your ears with the Social’s signature event at the Union Theater in the West Adams Historic District. Feast your eyes on the beautiful, 360 degree Velaslavasay Panorama while your ears are energized by ”chronicler of American music” Frank Fairfield (who’s toured with indie folk faves Fleet Foxes), stringband performer and The Simpsons character designer Joe Wack & Friends, and Old Time dance band Triple Chicken Foot.
Bring the young’uns (or your Old Time Inner Child) to Farmlab on Saturday for daytime workshops on a dizzying array of all-but-lost artistry from claw hammer banjo to square dance calling to shape note singing. In the evening, there’s a kids dance, a cake walk, and a square dance (to work off that cake you’ve just won) with callers Susan Michaels and Maggie Lind and dance bands Sausage Grinder and Black Crown Stringband.
To whet your whistle, the East Side Brewers (Northeast L.A. home brewers who kept the L.A. Record crew hydrated at SXSW) will provide “Exceptional Home Brew” on Friday and Saturday.
